Today you all get to meet Gary or as he is affectionately known around his parts “Whale”! Gary comes from outback NSW and is a regular fixture at the local pub slipping down a few beers and generally chatting with his mates about the Rugby and their cars. “I am not a real complex bloke,” he writes in his email.

“Most if not all the people around here know I am a poof. It’s not any big deal. A couple of blokes have tried to give me a hard time but I can handle myself pretty well in a tussle! They don’t really make that mistake again.”

Gary sounds like a bit of a tough Aussie bloke living in the outback but he goes on to explain himself a little more. He writes, “I am not one of those bar room brawlers so don’t get the wrong idea. Just some peanuts don’t know when enough is enough until you show them. That is the outback way and you city blokes probably think that is pretty barbaric. But those blokes are now good mates and they respect me. But I am not telling anyone to do the same thing. No way!”

You know the more gay people I meet the more I realise that we are not all cut from the same clothe. Gary is a prime example of someone who is not a mainstream gay person and I think it is great. I have been in the outback and I understand where he is coming from.

I have a boyfriend and he is like the opposite to me. Which is really good because he challenges me and brings out my softer side. We have been together for about 3 years now and he is happy for me to go off and work on the stations while he has his office job. The guys at the local Rugby Club Rooms really gave us a ripping when we first came out together. I mean they stirred the crap out of us. It was a hoot. They were calling me the “local bum bandit” and I would chase them around the bar.

It is great to read that Gary’s local community eventually embraced them both again despite a few hiccups while people adjusted to the new dynamics.
